Get Paid for Your Unused Data!

Clark Howard Clark Howard Tuesday, April 21 st 2015

The prices in the cellphone world keep going down, down, down!

Walmart Family Mobile has a new deal offering unlimited talk, text and 1 GB of data for $29.88. One gig of data is enough for a little more than half of us to get by on. If you go over that limit, you are throttled for the remainder of the billing month. Then when you start your new billing period, that’s when you go back to LTE.

The nice thing about this offer is that while it’s $29.88 to get in the door, each additional person on the plan pays only $24.88.

The price trend in wireless is in decline

On my smartphone data plan guide, it’s become common to have a $35 a month price point for unlimited talk, text and 2.5 GB.

But the big news coming is going to be announced by Republic Wireless. Their CEO says they’re moving to $10 a month for unlimited talk and text across the board. Then you choose how much data to buy. I’m expecting that data will price out around $10 for 1 GB, though exact pricing has not yet been announced.

But what makes Republic’s forthcoming offer really ununusual is that is you buy 1 GB at $10 but only use 500 MB during that period…they will send you $5 back!

So they will only bill you for the data you use. No more worrying about overpaying for too much data; it won’t cost you anything because you’ll be paid for your unused data.

Years ago, back when it was common to pay $100 a month for cellphone service, Forbes had a cover story talking about a future where you’ll pay $10 a month for wireless. That was an amazing thought back then. But now it’s possible, and will even be overwhelmingly probable within the next year.

So if you’re still paying too much, check out these options I’ve mentioned and save yourself some money!

A Must Read Article

I usually don’t verbally recommend others to read articles that I post on social media but this article I give 2 thumbs up a recommendation to everybody to take the time to read and absorb the passionate content of dedication and perseverance.

This write up is in the Forbes May edition magazine if you would like to grab your copy but if not, the same article is on the Forbes website.

Twinkie’s Miracle Comeback: The Untold, Inside Story of a $2 Billion Feast

With ingenuity, capital and creative chemistry, billionaire C. Dean Metropoulos and Apollo Global’s Andy Jhawar rescued Hostess Brands Hostess Brands–and set themselves up to feast on a $2 billion gain.

Walk in the door of Hostess Brands’ flagship bakery in Emporia, Kansas and your first thought is: What a dump. The former front office for the bakery that pumps out classic American treats like golden Twinkies and swirl-topped Cup Cakes is a series of dank, near-empty rooms with scuffed, oatmeal-color linoleum floors, water-stained ceiling panels and a jumble of mismatched office furniture that looks like it was picked up off the curb. Three minutes in this place and you’re suddenly thankful for the wilted sign on the front door warning visitors that firearms are barred from the premises.

This grim wing of the Hostess plant is a leftover from the old Hostess–the one that debt, pension costs and mismanagement shuttered in 2012. But throw on a hairnet and pass on to the newly rehabilitated factory floor, and it makes sense why billionaire C. Dean Metropoulos, Apollo Global senior partner Andy Jhawar and Kansas Governor Sam Brownback are standing here, breathing in the sticky sweet air on a foggy April morning.

The new factory is bright and clean. Tight rows of Twinkies m arch along the $20 million Auto Bake system with the precision of Soviet soldiers in a May Day parade. Yellow robotic arms, which look like they should be welding Teslas rather than boxing Twinkies, stack snacks with hypnotic rhythm. This 500-person plant produces more than 1 million Twinkies a day, 400 million a year. That’s 80% of Hostess’ total total output–output that under the old regime required 14 plants and 9,000 employees. And it’s about to get more efficient: Metropoulos and Jhawar just installed a second Auto–Bake system, this one for Cup Cakes, and the governor is here to cut the ribbon.

For some people, half of what we spend on food is often spent eating out. We all know eating out can be tough on a diet. Yet there are free apps and websites to help shift the balance of power in your favor by connecting you with healthier eating choices — no matter where you are.The New York Timesrecently ran a story that explored how hard it can be to control what and how much you consume when you dine out. But they noted how technology is stepping into that breach to come to the rescue.

Check out these apps and websites to help you eat healthy when you eat out

Food Tripping app – Find great alternatives to fast food wherever you are. Food Tripping locates the closest eateries, juice joints, farmers’ markets, microbreweries, and more

Healthy Out app – Find a healthy meal. Free online ordering from NYC’s best restaurants. Create an account so we can personalize your healthy menu

Gluten Free Restaurant Items app – Provides you with gluten free food items of over 150 most popular restaurant and fast-food chains

Find Me Gluten Free app – Helps you eat gluten free. We have free iPhone and Android apps that help you find gluten free businesses and products

DINE Gluten Free app – Lets you access our huge database of Gluten Free Dining & Travel REVIEWS from the U.S. — and around the world — when you’re on-the-go

Websites – Find nutrition information for Healthy Dining-approved restaurant menus, Sodium Savvy and Kids LiveWell choices – If you are managing food allergies or are a restaurant professional, SafeFARE provides tools and resources to help you create a safer, more enjoyable dining experience – Guide to allergy-friendly restaurants across the United States, rated by people with food allergies – Safely eat and serve foods free from gluten, wheat, dairy, peanuts, tree nuts, corn, egg, soy, and more

Don’t forget the java!

On the fun side, there’s also a NYC startup with an app called Cups that is like the anti-Starbucks. It puts together a consortium of indie coffee shops, then you pay a subscription and can drink all you want for a flat rate per month. Of course, we’re talking New York prices, so this service will set you back $45 a month for unlimited coffee!

Avoid the Bermuda Triangle

Some years ago, I wrote in Clark’s Big Book of Bargainsabout how to eat out at restaurants the Clark Smart way. At the time, I discussed the Bermuda Triangle of the restaurant industry where restaurateurs make their biggest profits: Appetizers, desserts and alcohol.

Now the Bermuda Triangle of dining is snaring diners because the price of wine is up. The Los Angeles Times reports wine production is at the lowest level since 1975 at the same time that consumption is up. Hence the squeeze play leading to higher prices.

This is a time to product substitute. You may need to become more selective about the wine you choose to drink and look for the deals.

Or why not have that glass of wine at home instead of at the restaurant? Or why not look for discounts on sites like or use a site like that lets you make reservations online and earn points toward free meals?

And if you’ve ever wondered how much to tip when eating out, you may want to read this article about the new normal when it comes to restaurant tipping! But don’t read it on a full stomach; I want you to enjoy that meal when you go out and take the trouble to eat healthy!
